The Department of Conservation has asked a real estate company if it would consider a land swap for a Northland sandspit.

Property developer Landco is working on subdivision plans for the Ngunguru sandspit and adjoining headland.

But it has indicated it might be willing to exchange the coastal property for Crown land elsewhere.

DoC and the local community want the spit saved as a bird sanctuary and regional park.

DoC's Northland Conservator Chris Jenkins says there has been a formal approach to Landco but they have received no response yet.

Mr Jenkins says however, finding a property equivalent to the Ngunguru sandspit will be very difficult.
