The big question raised at last week's public meeting about the Omapere and Opononi beach erosion was "why the heck hasn't the council done something about it before now?"

But no voice was raised against proposals to protect the local beach and adjacent properties, Hokianga Harbour Foreshore Restoration Society John Klaricich said.

The society plans action to counteract the sand and bank erosion seriously undermining private properties and Far North District Council reserve and assets.

Up to 20 metres has been chewed off the foreshore in recent years, 4m of that during one storm last year.
