Property developer Landco says it is open to suggestions of a land-swap deal for the Ngunguru sandspit in Northland.

The Tutukaka Coast Ratepayers' Association, the Department of Conservation, environmental groups and local people are opposed to any subdivision of the spit and want it saved as a regional park.

The association says it is talking to DoC about the chances of offering Crown land elsewhere to Landco in exchange for the spit.

A Landco spokesperson, George Hulbert, says that while the developer has not been approached by DoC, it would carefully consider any serious proposal.

DoC says there could be difficulty in finding an acceptable piece of land in Northland to exchange for the spit; but Landco might be interested in land elsewhere.
