The Ngunguru Coast Action Group is vowing to fight any plans to put several hundred sections on the ecologically significant Ngunguru Sandspit.

The Northern Advocate revealed this week that Landco, which owns the 151-hectare sandspit, had plans to subdivide the spit into as many as 400 sections and leave 50ha at the northern tip as a reserve.

The Advocate also revealed that Landco had offered local hapu sweeteners to help it get consent for the plan, including help building a marae and an educational facility. The company denied any secret deals had been offered.

Ngunguru Coast Action Group spokeswoman Anna Murphy said the group would oppose the subdivision plans and felt it unlikely Landco would be able to get consent for a development of that scale on such a significant area.
