Is Ngunguru Sandspit set to get a 400-lot subdivision? - Picture/Michael Cunningham

Ngunguru Sandspit, on the coast north-east of Whangarei, could become a 400-lot subdivision if plans uncovered by The Northern Advocate come to anything.

Landco, which owns the 151-hectare spit, is believed to have written to hapu in the area offering sweeteners in exchange for hapu members not opposing its plans.

The Northern Advocate has been told by a hapu member that Landco has offered to build a marae, put in roading and power on hapu land, give educational assistance and help with Treaty of Waitangi and Maori Fisheries claims. The hapu member said Landco proposed a 400-lot subdivision for the spit, covering about 45ha with a 50-hectare reserve on the sandspit's northern tip.
