Frank Newman

The suggestion of a binding referendum on the naming of Ngunguru triggered some heated debate at last week's Whangarei District Council full meeting.

Councillor Frank Newman moved the motion to hold a referendum to establish the degree of public support for the proposal to change the name of Ngunguru to Nung-a-roo. Although it was seconded, when it came to the voting Cr Newman was the only one in favour.

He said that both Maori and non-Maori residents in Whangarei should have a say on the issue and that WDC had not consulted with the public.
