Hoons tearing around Bream Bay and over the dunes of a wildlife refuge have sparked a crackdown - and spurred beachgoers into digging trenches to slow down speeding vehicles.

Last weekend the Department of Conservation "apprehended" half a dozen trailbike riders seen damaging protected dunes in the Waipu Wildlife Reserve near Uretiti. Riders were also seen in conservation areas further north.

It was the second crackdown in a week, and more are promised. Biodiversity programme manager Keith Hawkins said as well as damaging wildlife habitats, vehicles threatened the safety of other beachgoers.
