Police are urging Northland boat owners to go to extra lengths to secure their boats.

This comes after a spate of incidents where boats and outboard motors have been stolen in the Whangarei and Kaipara districts.

In the past two weeks, five outboard motors have been reported stolen in Matapouri, Tutukaka and Dargaville.

Police say the thieves have been carrying out their crimes during the night and targeting boats that have been parked on driveways.
