Could a successful American scheme for buying and securing urban land for public use work in New Zealand's increasingly intensively developed cities?
"In the US, we have come to a pretty abrupt realisation that we have a limited land base," says Ralph Benson of the US-based Trust for Public Land. The gently spoken Californian was in New Zealand recently as the guest of the Long Bay-Okura Great Park Society, which is seeking to secure the last sizeable chunk of green space left on Auckland's North Shore in the hope of quadrupling the size of the already existing Long Bay Regional Park.
