Janette McKay's car was written off when she drove into a cow on the Whangarei-Tutukaka Rd at night.

Paul McKay is upset police did not turn up when he called 111 three times after his wife's car hit a cow on the Whangarei-Ngunguru Rd.

Janette McKay was driving home to Tutukaka from the city with their 16-year-old daughter Rachel at 9.15pm on Thursday last week when the collision occurred.

The 1995 Toyota Corolla was written-off when the cow - one of several on the road - came over the bonnet and its head pushed the shattered windscreen to within centimetres of Rachel's face before the animal got up and ran off.
