The Ministry of Education has taken control of another Northland school, bringing the number of government interventions in the region to six.

Ngunguru Primary School, with about 200 pupils located on the Tutukaka coast, is the latest school deemed incapable of handling its own affairs.

After a critical report from the Education Review Office - which listed concerns with governance, leadership and the quality of self-review at the school - Minister of Education Hekia Parata has instructed the secretary of education to appoint a limited statutory manager to the school's board of trustees.

The statutory manager, yet to be confirmed, will take control of all communication and employment matters at the school, as well as establishing a robust complaints procedure.

According to the ERO report, "ongoing division among trustees" led to three trustees resigning at the end of last year. One of the former trustees, who did not wish to be named, said they had resigned in protest at the way the board was running the school.
