Conservation News No. 125 • February 2002

Ngunguru Spit, one of the last undeveloped sandspit habitats north of Auckland, is under threat again. A developer who has owned the sandspit since 1974 has reapplied to subdivide it. Ngunguru Spit needs to be bought at Government Valuation and protected as public open space. This could be done jointly by Whangarei District Council, Northland Regional Council and the Department of Conservation, with assistance from funding agencies and other groups. Forest and Bird’s Northern branch has already pledged several thousand dollars for this purpose.
