Northland's Linda Donaldson has laced up her tramping boots for the longest walk of her life.

The 50-year-old granny is walking the length of New Zealand to help raise funds for life-saving defibrillators used by St John.

And every step of the way thoughts of her brother Lloyd, who died of a cardiac arrest, will not be far from her mind.

"I've been inspired to live life without regrets following my brother's sudden cardiac arrest," Ms Donaldson said.

"I've wanted to do the big walk since as a child I heard about the pioneer length-of-New Zealand walker A. H. Reed."

Last month she began the 3000km journey along the Te Araroa Trail.
