To protect our outstanding landscapes, we need a more intelligent way forward.

The Environment Court has handed the farmers of the Mackenzie Basin a compliment they dont want, and which they fear will be a burden. Late last year, the court ruled that the basin, in the central South Island, is an outstanding natural landscape that must be protected from inappropriate development.

The decision is controversial because it will constrain the ability of landowners and Crown lessees to diversify and develop their farmland. They had gone to court in a bid to overturn a provision introduced by the local council seeking to control rural subdivision; the appeal failed, and the court ruled that the council hadnt gone far enough to protect the landscape. Future generations of New Zealanders, said Judge Jon Jackson, will wish to experience an outstanding natural landscape as the foreground to Aoraki/Mt Cook.
