Moves by the Whangarei District Council to place private land under “special protection” have been described as a land grab.

Federated Farmers of New Zealand Northland president Ian Walker accused the council of stealing land from farmers.

Walker says the WDC “intends to let you own your own land, pay rates but they will determine how you will use it”.

However, the council says its landscape review project will devise protecting and management strategies for “important landscapes”.
