Other Coastlines - Te Arai / Mangawhai
Written by Steve Marshall
Sunday, 20 November 2011

The folks at Te Arai Beach Preservation Society are still fighting to protect their piece of paradise and would welcome some help. They've made it very easy to write a submission to retain the existing protective zoning for the area.

Te Arai Beach is known as the last untouched ocean beach in the Auckland region and is home to some of New Zealandís rarest shorebirds. Its untouched beauty and tranquil setting offers city dwellers a rare opportunity to visit a coastal area free from the built environment.

The first application ignited widespread public opposition resulting in independent commissioners declining the proposed development with further recommendations to strengthen environmental controls on the area.

To the publicís dismay the new Auckland Council has allowed the Te Arai Coastal Lands Trust to re-apply for a private plan change.
