Northland's iconic Ngunguru Sandspit has been saved from development with the Government understood to be announcing a landswap deal today that will put the 121 hectare sandspit into public ownership.

Conservation Minister Kate Wilkinson was due to visit the sandspit with Whangarei MP Phil Heatley today, after making an announcement at Ngunguru, but the Government is keeping mum on what the visit is about at this stage.

However, the Northern Advocate understands the minister will announce it has done a deal with the owners of the sandpit to swap it for a piece of land from the Conservation estate. The sandspit would then probably be put under the care of the Department of Conservation.
