...the Wairua River proposal was substantially cheaper and more environmentally-friendly than a dam on the Ngunguru River

The Wairua River is set to become the emergency water source for Whangarei city, acting as a back-up supply in case of severe drought.

At a meeting of the Infrastructure and Services Committee yesterday, the Whangarei District Council confirmed its intention to develop the Wairua River as the next water source for the Whangarei Water Supply Area.

The council has also decided to put an investigation into damming the Ngunguru River on hold.
