A footpath needed for child safety will soon be built, as long as there are no more major storms.

For 20 years Ngunguru residents have been lobbying the Whangarei District Council to build a footpath on Shoebridge Cres, which is used daily by children walking to school and includes a dangerous blind corner.

Last year the council agreed to do the footpath as its only new path project, with the work due to start in March this year.

But the devastating Cyclone Wilma meant the budget had to be spent on storm damage and the project was deferred until the new financial year which started on July 1.
