An historic church now standing firm and dry on new piles will be sanded, painted and polished up to return it to its 19th century glory.

Monthly working bees for the restoration of the 126-year-old St John's Anglican Church at Glenbervie will begin on Saturday, with volunteers assembling in the church carpark at 99 Ngunguru Rd at 8am.

Pehiaweri Marae committee chairman Les Wakefield said it was hoped restoration of the kauri and totara church would be over by Christmas.
