Fishing tales could be taking a back seat to refurbishment tales at Tutukaka Marina over the next five months.

A $1.8 million project to replace and revamp the original piers started last week.

Tutukaka Marina Management Trust chairman John Warren says the work will be done on piers A through to E, which were built in 1985.

The wooden structures are now corroding and will be replaced with new concrete floating pontoons.

The piers' half-length fingers will be replaced by full-length ones, which will run the length of the boat.
