Tom and May Fish celebrated 60 years of marriage on March 31 with their diamond wedding anniversary.

The key to a successful marriage is patience and understanding, May says.

Tom says he will always remember the advice he got on his wedding day.

"Falling out is terrible but making up is lovely," he says.

The couple has received plenty of well wishing, including congratulatory letters from the Queen, the governor-general, Prime Minister John Key and Whangarei MP Phil Heatley.

On April 2 the truly-weds were to renew their vowels at the Ngunguru Retirement Village Hall.
