1:03pm: BREAKING NEWS: From a reader:

"Significant wave surge at Tutukaka marina. One vessel broke its mooring and had to be towed out to a nearby bay. Other moored boats were nosing down into the water and pulling at their ropes. A few power boats seemed to be struggling against the surge as they were trying to navigate the channel out of the marina. Very brown, bubbling water raised the water level by more than a metre at the boat ramp. One vehicle had to be removed quickly before being overwhelmed by the tide (small, attached trailer completely submerged)".
