Cyclone debris may have played part in crash

Despite heroic efforts from passers-by to rescue the driver of a car that plunged into Ngunguru River, the woman died before she could be freed.

The single-car crash that claimed the life of a 53-year-old Wellington's Bay woman is the first road fatality in Northland this year.

The tragedy could have been due partly to the ravages that cyclone Wilma wreaked on Northland late last week, said police investigating the crash.
