We finally have a beefed-up coastal development policy but more work needs to be done to protect our special beaches.

The annual summer migration to the coast is a long-standing national tradition. Many of us fondly remember sun-baked holidays at the beach as children. Those who are now parents will be taking their families to the special coastal places they enjoyed as youngsters.

But will the beach still be special when we get there? Coastal development has been relentlessly marching along our coastlines for several decades. That unspoilt treasure may not stay that way.

Take the case of Ngunguru Sandspit, on the Tutukaka Coast, near Whangarei. This low-lying expanse of sand shelters the Ngunguru River mouth from the sea. It can be accessed publicly only by boat. It’s wild, windswept and undeveloped – a coastal gem.
