It was a Christmas celebration to remember at Matapouri as a High Court victory returned a piece of wahi tapu land to public ownership after 40 years.

And in a bizarre twist to the case, the Crown has already paid a family $3.5 million for the piece of Otito Reserve the High Court has now found it owned all along.

The Crown paid $3.5 million for 0.9ha of the 1.1ha property previously owned by the Ringer family. Friends of Matapouri and Te Whanau o Rangiwhakaahu Hapu Charitable Trust lodged High Court action against the Department of Conservation, Land Information NZ and the then Attorney-General over the land in 2008.
