How a blaze started and destroyed a large shed housing vehicles including a vintage car has puzzled fire investigators.

Northland fire safety officer Lindsay Murray scraped through the ashes and the charred structure of the workshop but was unable to determine what started the fire in a workshop on Ngunguru, 18km north-east of Whangarei.

Firefighters were called to the shed just after 3am yesterday.
