Verse of The Day
(Luke 1:26-28)

(By Telegraph—Press Association.) WHANGAREI, November 1, 1937.

An incident which resulted in the inadvertent killing of a tuatara lizard occurred at Ngunguru, on the East Coast, near Whangarei, during the weekend. Campers heard a rustling sound in the undergrowth in the semi-gloom and imagined the visitor was a snake. A blow with an axe seemed to have little effect, and the creature was eventually killed with a knife. It was later identified by a member of the party as a tuatara lizard about a foot long and heavily plated about the head.

The tuatara is found principally on the Poor Knights and the Hen and Chicken Islands, although recently it is believed that the lizards have made homes on the mainland. Tracks believed to have been theirs have been found on the sands at Ngunguru and Whananaki. Both beaches are close to the Poor Knights.
