The New Zealand Coastal Policy Statement 2010 came into force today.

"EDS is delighted that the new NZCPS has finally come into force," said EDS Senior Policy Analyst, Raewyn Peart today.

"The review of the NZCPS first started in 2004 so it has been a long time coming. But now we have finally got there.

Giving effect to these new provisions will require outstanding coastal landscapes and natural character areas to be mapped right around the country.

"The new NZCPS very clearly states that high value parts of the coast must now be protected from all adverse effects. That is a very strong obligation. It also provides unambiguous protection for threatened coastal biodiversity including Hector's and Maui's dolphin.
