Firefighters had to take water from a swimming pool to douse a scrub fire that came within 3m of a house near the Northland coastal settlement of Tutukaka around midnight.

They were called to the fire at Whangaumu Bay, nearly 29km north-east of Whangarei, about 11.45pm.

It was a close call for one house when the flames got within 3m, Ngunguru Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy fire chief Chris Gibbs told NZPA.
