A plan to preserve the history of Ngunguru School has seen five pupils win the New Zealand Community Problem Solving programme.

Students from last year started working on the idea, but ran out of time, so this year's team followed it through to the competition. Their hard work has seen them win the year 8 to 10 division. The aim was to identify a problem in the community, write a scenario and apply appropriate steps to develop a plan of action.

Teacher Vicki Taylor, who works with gifted pupils, said the school's history was chosen because it was felt students could make a difference.
