...the opportunity to buy the land was "too good to pass up".

An anonymous benefactor and a government contribution has allowed a distinctive piece of coastal land near Wellington to pass into public hands.

Greater Wellington regional council said yesterday that a consortium including itself, the Conservation Department, Hutt City Council, the Nature Heritage Fund and a "private contributor" had successfully bid for a 284-hectare site at Baring Head.

The property, with a rating value of $1.7 million, was largely farmland but the coastal cliffs were ecologically important.
