“Na, kua riro na te Ariki, a Karaiti Ihu i a koutou, kia pena ano ta koutou haere i roto i a ia; Kia whai pakiaka, ano he whare i hanga ki runga ki a ia, whakapumau rawa ki runga ki to koutou whakapono, kia pera me koutou i whakaakona ra, kia hira rawa ai te whakawhetai.” (Colossians 2:6-7)

Hillary Challenge 2008 -- final round 19-23 May PDF Print

Saturday, 28 June 2008

One afternon last December I had a phone call from Michelle McCabe, leader of the Whangarei Girls and Boys High School's combined team for the 2008 Hillary Challenge Competition. She told me the preliminary round (in which they subsequently came first from a field of 19) required an environmental component and they'd elected to make theirs the Ngunguru Sandspit. Michelle was seeking information and whatever support we could offer. That began a relationship between NSaPS and 8 inspiring students, their coaches and parents.

You have seen subsequent updates and photos of "our" team on this website. Now you can read the harrowing conclusion: 2008's Hillary Challenge Finals, in the words of Michelle, team leader. This time they did not win, but placed 9th in a field of 12 from all over New Zealand plus a team from Singapaore. Since none of them is in their last year at high school they are already planning next year's Hillary Challenge campaign. Read Michelle's account and see if you think you'd be likely to do the same.

We really need your participation in reviewing our Conservation Management Strategy (CMS)!

The Northland conservancy is beginning that review process.  The current CMS expires in 2009.

A CMS describes how places the Department manages on your behalf, (public conservation land and water) should be and look in 10 years time.

It's about how people like you can support the conservation task. So your views on the places you visit, value and treasure are really important.

Guidance on making submissions on the Proposed NZCPS PDF Print

Submissions have now closed

The NZCPS is a very important document in the hierarchy of resource management policies and plans. It sets out objectives and policies for the coast on matters of national significance. All regional and district level policies and plans under the Resource Management Act 1991 must give effect to the NZCPS.

The proposed 2008 NZCPS will replace the existing 1994 NZCPS which has been rather ineffective in giving clear direction about coastal planning and management. This has been in part because it has not been followed by district councils and consent authorities (poor practice) and also because it was a first generation NZCPS and was not as directive as it might have been.

The opportunity is now open to community groups and individuals to submit on the proposed 2008 NZCPS. In making submissions, EDS suggests that the following high level considerations should be included.
