General Business

Alan Martin on behalf of the Conservation Board reported on the organisation’s priorities: Kauri die-back, saving the kereru, saving the kiwi; praised work at Whangarei Quarry Gardens - ideal to visit. Gina Williams talked on how we can all do our bit when we visit the spit; check that not carrying ants on your backpack, shoes are free of seeds.
Judy Gilbert expressed concern that people might be carrying pinecones away from the Sandspit. Their seeds spread by wind whereas if they are left on the ground their seeds will not spread.
Jim thanked committee members for a year with much progress, including the unique contributions of Hone and Aorangi. Special thanks to Sophie Edwards for her ongoing support and to outgoing committee member Loren Hope for her fantastic work on EarthEd including the school rubbish audit after the beachcombing collection.

Hone closed the meeting with a Karakia.

signs at the boat ramp

In January 2016 a large WDC/DOC sign was erected by the Ngunguru estuary boat ramp opposite Kakariki Road. Details on the sign were about native birds and local beach and sandspit reserve rules. One evening in August the sign was discovered under the dinghies as the post had snapped off at the base. It was rescued and handed to WDC for safe keeping but unfortunately WDC has not had time to re-erect the sign.

With the school holidays and warmer weather I would like NSaPS to advertise a timely reminder that at all times, NO dogs are allowed on the sandspit beaches or the Sandspit Reserve as shown by the map on the website’s homepage.

Dogs and paw prints continue to be sighted on the spit and beaches. This makes our shore nesting birds vulnerable to disturbance and possible abandonment of nests. I have asked a few people with dogs on the spit to please observe the several signs and large information boards placed along the estuary and on the spit and the answer invariably is “Oh! but my dog would never harm any birds”!

The Okura Environmental Group says plans to develop 130 hectares of coastal land north of Auckland will have disastrous effects on the nearby marine reserve.

Chairman Peter Townend says an access road built by Todd Property on the land near Okura Estuary has resulted in high levels of sediment.

"This is the last bit of coastal land available ... there's no more ... it's gone so ... excuse me getting upset about it.. but it's just ridiculous," he said.
